It isn’t easy in a country with so many sheep to promote a plant based diet, but that’s exactly what Bean Supreme has been doing for more than 30 years.
Founded in 1984 by Paul Johnston – a pioneer of all things vegetarian and one of the first Kiwis to bravely introduce tofu to a meat-loving New Zealand – Bean Supreme was promoting the benefits of a plant-based diet long before the advent of Meatless Mondays, flexitarians and fashionable vegan Instagram celebrities.
Life Health Foods bought Bean Supreme in 2006, forming the basis of our tofu and protein-alternatives offering. Now a well-recognised part of the local food scene, the brand has widened its scope to include gourmet vegetarian sausages and vege mince. More recently, delicious Café Style wholefood burgers have taken the New Zealand market by storm, becoming some of the hottest sellers in the vegetarian category.
The burgers have won numerous awards, including Best Vegetarian product at both the 2015 and 2016 Healthy Food Guide Awards, and top spot in the Health & Wellness Product category at the 2016 NZ Food Awards.
In keeping with Life Health Foods policy, Bean Supreme goes to great lengths to only source certified non-genetically modified (non-GM) ingredients, and places a great emphasis on animal welfare. The brand proudly supports the RNZSPCA with monthly financial donations, and also provides the resident kiwi birds at Otorohanga Zoo with their favourite after-dinner treat – tofu!
Bean Supreme continues to go from strength to strength, with new products introduced regularly and a booming foodservice offering.
